lyrics

Synecdoche

Last night I dreamt that everything had changed, you and I were suddenly the same.
All our thoughts were loud enough, that we could speak the way we think.
You were in my head and you could feel the way I see you, and I could see the way it feels when you see through me.
You were part of me, synecdoche.

But I awoke to find that nothing really changed. You and I don’t really share a brain.
All our thoughts had fallen silent, so now I can’t hear what you’re thinking.
And you can’t get in my head, no matter how hard we try; you just can’t see the world through my eyes. So there’s you and I, and a great divide between.

If you could see how it could be, if we all wear our hearts on our sleeves.
If you could see how it could be, if I could really see you, and you could see me.
Then we could get real and finally be free.
This world could be ours, if we want it to be.

Last night I dreamt that everything had changed, you and I were suddenly the same.
Because I was in your head and I heard thoughts just like my own, and finally understood that we were not alone. So why can’t it be synecdoche?
